If you ever want to laugh out loud, take a peek into Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy Improv practices or shows. The students recently competed in the “ComedySportz” Chicago High School League, and the crowd confirmed—they are the funniest in the Chicago-land area.
The group of ten competed in “ComedySportz” with five other local high schools. They came out on top in the tournament, and on April 10th they competed against Loyola Academy for the championship.
“ComedySportz” is a professional comedy improvisational theater company in Chicago. They provide trainers who visit participating schools to talk with students, lead workshops, and teach them the art of improv comedy.
“Improv teaches a lot of things,” said PMSA improv sponsor, Ms. Emunds. “It teaches listening skills, teamwork, cooperation, communication, performance, and teamwork. It also encourages students to think on their feet. They were really a team competing. I think they’re the best.”
"ComedySportz" is a completely improvised show in which a red and blue team battle for your laughter. A referee hosts each show and asks the audience to shout out suggestions and ideas to drive the show. PMSA students were up to the challenge and ready for the competition.
“I liked ComedySportz because it gave us a chance to compete with other schools instead of us just competing with each other,” said PMSA senior and improv captain Donald Closs. “At the championship there was a packed house. The fans were happy. We had to be good to make them happy. Overall it was a very fun experience, and we did a good job.”
ComedySportz officials agreed.
“They were fantastic,” said Kristi Parker-Barnhart, Audience Services & Special Projects Coordinator at The ComedySportz Theatre. “They are the perfect example of what we hope for all of our HSL teams. They played for fun and were very poised in their victory. I think I can safely say that Proviso Math and Science Academy is truly a class act and I feel very fortunate to have them representing The ComedySportz High School League as our 2011 Champions.”
Congratulations, students! You are a vital part of Proviso Rising!
