Congratulations to PMSA Senior Chinelo Agwuncha, who was selected from a “deep and richly” talented pool of students from across Illinois to serve as a member of the Student Advisory Council (SAC) to the Illinois State Board of Education.
Student Advisory Council members will meet with the Illinois State Board of Education during the 2009-2010 school year and provide valuable insight on important academic issues from a student’s perspective.
“I feel happy and excited to be a part of something so big and so important,” said Agwuncha. “I look forward to working with other students from across Illinois, observing the state board, and understanding what their priorities are. Hopefully, I will be able to work with other students and come to a consensus on how to solve various issues plaguing our school systems.”
Each year Student Advisory Council members select a special project to work on through the year and present findings to the board at the May meeting. This year, the Student Advisory Council is participating with State Farm in planning and hosting a student summit on dropout prevention on October 12th in Bloomington, IL. Student Advisory Council members will also be participating in a follow up summit for educators and other professionals on November 4th in Bloomington, IL presenting their ideas for addressing the dropout crisis in Illinois.
PTHS 209 Superintendent Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart congratulated Agwuncha on her selection, and encouraged her to display a spirit of excellence during her tenure.
“I am very proud of Chinelo,” said Collins-Hart. “It is an honor to have one of our students represent the students of Illinois at the state level. I know that she will make us proud and continue to display the level of excellence that caused her to be rewarded with this high honor.”
The first SAC meeting will be in conjunction with the Illinois State Board of Education Board meeting September 16 - 17, 2009 in Springfield. The second meeting will be in conjunction with the Illinois Youth Dropout Prevention Summit on October 12, 2009 in Bloomington.
Congratulations Chinelo! We are so proud of you. Agwuncha thanked her teacher, Dr. Swartzbaugh for encouraging her to apply for this opportunity.
