Proviso Principals Rally Support and Outline Their Visions of Proviso Rising

Proviso Township High Schools District 209 began the new school year with an open door Principal Meet and Greet for the Proviso community and various community stakeholders.

On August 9th -August 11th, new PTHS principals opened the schools doors, articulated their visions, and garnered parent and community support for Proviso Rising. Mrs. Kim Echols serves as principal of Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy. Dr. Roudell Kirkwood serves as principal of Proviso West High School, and Mr. Tony Valente serves as principal of Proviso East High School. All three principals have a long history of educational leadership, service, and dedication to student success. They began their first school year at PTHS with an open dialogue expressing their goals, expectations, and plans for the new school year.

“It has always stuck with me that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” said Mrs. Echols as she spoke with PMSA students and parents. Echols held the first Meet and Greet in PMSA’s auditorium on August 9th. “You have a voice here. In order for us to become number one, we have to work together. We have to look at what is working, what has worked, and then we have to continue to build in the interim.”

Mr. Valente, a former teacher at Proviso East High School, held his Meet and Greet on August 10th.

“This is my dream job,” he said. “I wanted to come back here and do the things that I know I can do with the help of these [teachers, faculty, staff, parents, and students] great people. I want to inspire learners. We want to learn lessons from beginning to end. We will never give up on our students.”

At Proviso West High School, Dr. Kirkwood spoke to a full theater of students, staff, and parents about parent involvement, using data to make positive changes, and the value of education.

“It is important that we understand and appreciate the importance of education,” he said. “No matter where you go in life, education can help you become successful. We want success for all of our students, but we cannot spell success without ‘u’.”

Principals introduced plans that included: building stronger relationships with parents, creating more rigor and relevance in the classroom, a focus on systems for prevention and student intervention, and teacher teaming that creates a stronger learning environment for students. They also expressed the desire to make learning more fun.

Each principal is charged with helping the school district meet the Board of Education’s goals to enhance and improve educational programming, address human resource needs and sustain organizational infrastructure, improve fiscal management, improve school climate both internally and externally, and establish strategies to improve community relations.

Each principal agreed that 2011-2012 has to be the year that District 209 meets and exceeds expectations.
